Health Statistics Landscape (Statistics Authority March 2016)
This overview of available health statistics is part of an overview by the UK Statistics Authority around improving the health and care statistics system. It lists statistics compiled by NHS England, ONS, Statistics Authority,  HSCIC and others. Sadly it does not include links to the resources.

Sources of Statistics: Vital Statistics (Commons Briefing papers SN07125 March 2015) – Introductory guide provides sources of statistics on population, demography and health.

Sources of Statistics: Health (Commons Briefing papers SN03843 March 2015) – Introductory guide provides sources of statistics on UK public health services.

Health and social care information sources – a guide for journalists 2014 (HSCIC Dec 2013). Includes a comprehensive listing of health and social care data sources and  descriptions of the contributing organisations.

Sources of Social Statistics: Health Services and Public Health – Commons Library Standard Note February 2014. A guide to the key sources in health services and public health statistics, providing sources on waiting lists, hospital activity, ambulance services, primary care, health screening, social care, personnel, health expenditure and public health.

Department of Health statistics A list of all statistics compiled for the Department of Health.

CCG Classification Groups  (YHPHO, July 2013) – a classification that groups together CCGs with similar populations based on age structure, population density, ethnicity and deprivation.

PHE data and analysis tools – (formerly ‘Data and knowledge gateway’) – A single point of access to data and analysis tools from across Public Health England  including:

  • specific health conditions – such as cancer, mental health, cardiovascular disease
  • lifestyle risk factors – such as smoking, alcohol and obesity
  • wider determinants of health – such as environment, housing and deprivation
  • health protection, and differences between population groups, including adults, older people, and children.

Note: Prescribing data at GP practice and CCG level using NHS Digital datasets are available from OpenPrescribing.

LTC Dashboard 
One of the NHS England tools for CCGs providing a summary of metrics that will support intelligent commissioning for long term conditions health and social care. The metrics are selected to take into account: risk factors, prevalence, quality of care, quality of life and economic activity.

NHS Staff : General Practice 2002-2012  -analysis of General Practice workforce including GPs by type and practice staff.

Episode data

Syndromic Surveillance Why are patients visiting their GP / Emergency department? – the syndromic surveillance programme is part of the public health early warning surveillance programme. Records the number of GP visits, both in hours and out of hours and ED visits for known indicators.

Hospital Episode Statistics
The national statistical data warehouse for England of the care provided by NHS hospitals and for NHS hospital patients treated elsewhere. HES is the data source for a wide range of healthcare analysis for the NHS, government and many other organisations and individuals.

RCS Data Tools
The RCS dashboards use HES data to produce Quality Dashboards and Procedure Explorer tools. You can compare down to GP practice level across a range of surgical procedures. Note not all GP practices are included.

Payment by Results in the NHS: tariff for 2013 to 2014

NHS reference costs
Reference costs are the average unit cost to the NHS of providing secondary healthcare to NHS patients and are used to set prices for NHS-funded services in England. Updated annually.

Unit Costs of Health and Social Care
Annual publication from Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU) outlining unit costs of health and social care services, including care home and hospital services, and health professionals.

NHS Prescription Services
Calculates the remuneration and reimbursement due to dispensing contractors across England and provide the NHS with a range of drug, financial and prescribing information including ePACT (real time on-line analysis of the previous sixty months prescribing data held on NHS Prescription Services’ Prescribing Database) and ePFIP (Electronic Prescribing & Financial Information for Practices).
